Everyone is bonding with this cute little creature. Even Jim is feeding it and checking in on it. Other boaters are pitching in, too. Pictured is Peg and Jim. Who would think a boat trip would take us all to this?! What do you get with a little red cooler filled with hay? An instant baby goat's first bed! The cooler, now turned on it's side, makes it easier for this little one to tempt it's new walking legs and check out the strange world it's in. Who could resist such a precious four-legged ball of fur? Daisy smells the goat on me and can't understand what's going on. Jim was walking Daisy today, while I was outside with Richard, petting the goat baby. It was nearly 80 deg. today. We are all sitting outside enjoying the weather. There are projects to get completed on the boat, but the conversation goes like this: " I can't decide to rig the hammock up to the jib roller or the stanchion. It I put it on the roller, it will put too much weight on the jib sail. If I mount it lower, it may not be off the deck".

I said "mount it to the main and off the end of the boom. This way you would be over the cockpit". Can't put it there because of the helm. "Then we could fasten to the main above the main roller and to the forward stanchion". But it would be in the sun during the day. Then we are back to mounting it off the main boom.

This conversation took about 15 minutes. We both looked at the boat from a distance of about 100 feet. Neither one of us ever got up to get a closer look. Ultimately, the hammock didn't get put up today, so we just sat in the sun all afternoon, until the temperature got too warm and then we went inside to cool off for a while.

The hammock is on the list to get done someday soon, along with several other projects. They all have do be completed, some day, some way. They will get done, maybe when the weather is a little cooler. (Note from Sharon: This is not for our boat but someone else's at the Marina.)

We rented a car and decided to go back to New York to see the snow. So this is the snow we drove 845 miles to see. But the trip had benefits. We got to see the grandchildren, too. Needless to say, they were suprised. A 14 hour drive if I wanted to do it non-stop. We stopped every couple of hours in search of a real Dunkin'Donuts. I just wanted a medium French Vanilla coffee. Is that too much to ask?! So when going north, the closest Dunkin'Donuts was Virginia. About 5 miles off of I-95. Once I had a French Vanilla coffee, I was good for another few hours of driving. Next Dunkin'Donuts was New Jersey. So It is roughly 250 miles between coffee stops. Keep this in mind if you like Dunkin'Donuts coffee.

This page will be dedicated to Daisy May. We got her two years ago from Homeward Bound Dog Rescue, not knowing what kind of life she had before us. They didn't know much about her. After a couple of weeks with us, we discovered that she had a life of abuse. Slowly she has learned to be a trusting friend. Occasionally she drifts back to her previous experiences, but then she looks around and sees her life now, and everything is alright again.
She took to boating easily, a lot more easily than she took to riding in a vehicle, but that's another story. She has only experienced sea sickness once, off the coast of Sandy Hook, N.J. The weather was rough, she couldn't get her footing and was sliding all over the fly bridge with Sharon trying to hold onto her.

Since then, she spends her days relaxing on the back of the boat or curled up in the corner of the couch. Life on a boat with a dog can have its difficulties, but life without a dog is non-negotiable, so it all works out for the better.
She has had many firsts in the last 2 years. We don't know that for sure, but we surmise that when she is apprehensive about something, she hasn't done it before.

Yesterday, we took her to the beach at Surfside. At first, she wouldn't walk on the sand, then she felt the warmth and jumped right in then the cool sand felt different so she hesitated for a moment. Then that was alright, then came the surf. The first couple of times, she ran away from the waves, but looking back to make sure they didn't get too close. Then she figured if the Dad (Jim) could walk in the water, it would be alright. Today we will post pictures of the lower Chesapeake Bay and a couple of the Dismal Swamp. The swamp is an experience that is hard to explain. Very narrow, sometimes dark, But oh what fun. We talked later and determined that is was probably the best 50 continuous miles that we travelled. The water was described as root beer (very fitting). The water was deep from shore to shore, so there isn't much of a danger of hitting bottom along the way if you get out of the middle. They have a rest area that is for cars on one side and boats on the other. You should have seen the looks on some of the driver's faces when they come around the corner and saw a bunch of large boats along side the road.
Completed some cleaning and then relaxed. We are planning on spending a few days here. The temperature during the days is upper 70's and the evenings in the lower 60's. After a long 9 1/2 hour day, we just relaxed on the boat with a glass of wine. Next day we made it to Myrtle Beach Yacht Club and took a berth at the Lightkeepers Marina. We went aground. Soft landing. We just waited a few minutes. The tide was coming in, so it floated us off with a little reverse. Just soft mud bottom, but it got our attention. I think it was the new navigators fault. She was suppose to paying a little more attention. We stopped in Carolina beach State Marina. I'm not a fan of a state park competing with private marinas, but a flat fee of $30. makes it attractive. They remodeled this marina in the last year, The slips were top rate. Carla the Park Ranger was very nice and Doc, the assistant helps us get tied up for the night. We will stop back and spend a few days in the spring.
We finally departed North Carolina today and entered South Carolina. We received a "Care Package" with a "Special Treat".. a bag of candy and some beautiful handmade cards from Kayla and Aidan. We know that someone cares!! Then a little further south, we looked at the weather a last time before leaving. NOAA said winds light, seas less than 1 foot until afternoon. We decided to take off to make it to the next scheduled stop before the rains started. Just like clockwork, 12:00 noon, the winds started to blow right on the head and waves started crashing over the bow and the bikes were holding on dearly to the front of the boat's hand rail. Then the fog bank rolled in. I thought a stiff wind would blow the fog away. Not a chance!
Sharon with camera in hand was stationed in front of the helm and was told to look for a "Green" one or a "Red" one. So down Adams creek we went at less than 2 kts. Out of the fog ahead of us popped a sailboat. I think he was as surprised as us. Do we continue or pull into one of the marinas that are along the way? We had about 1/8 mile visibility. I radioed ahead to the marina that was only 5 miles away and checked his conditions at the marina, they were the same and likely to get worse as the day goes on, so we continue. Around the turning basin in Morehead City, N.C. and the marina was directly ahead of us. Then Sharon yells out "DOLPHINS"!!! I'm looking for a marina and she is looking for dolphins. We spot the marina and get tied up in 20+ kts winds and both breathed a sigh of relief. I walked into the office to register and the Portside Marina owner asked me how the ride was and then he handed me a beer.(Jim deserved it!! as per Sharon)
Sharon was still on the flybridge looking for the dolphins. We also saw Pelicans flying around and diving for fish and Jelly Fish swimming all around the boats. So the last hour of the trip was fun and a change from the occasional boredom. We never felt that we were in danger, just a good adrenalin rush. The winds blew throught the rest of the day and the evening. Its good to be tied up to a concrete dock in 30 kts wind gusts. We turned in with the boat occasionally rocking us to sleep. About 2am, Sharon wakes me up and says "we got company" I look over and see Daisy in bed with us. The hard rain, thunder, lightening and the winds convinced her that she should crawl in bed with us. First time that happened, but we have lots of firsts on this trip.Jim and Sharon C. It is located just north of the Naval station. The marina had about 50 slips, with about 5 available for transients (overnight). David (owner) took over the marina when his father passed. I know we have said this before, but this marina is great. Courtesy car available, nice capt. lounge with a fully stocked kitchen (galley), cable television and a Hot Tub! What a great idea, hot tub after fighting the waves on the lower Chesapeake Bay.
We left a couple of days later after a visit in downtown Norfolk, and Portsmouth and a stop at Hampton Roads beach to take a look at the ocean. We would have stayed longer, the the wind was off the coast at about 40kts. Our visit to the beach was short. So back to the boat and the hot tub for the second evening. We cruised by the Navy ships that were in port the next morning. I counted less than 20 ships and 2 carriers in port. I'm assuming that a lot of ships are either deployed or the U.S. is in the progress of culling the fleet. I hope its the former. I realize the Battleship era has passed by the looks of some of the new Guided Missle Cruisers (CG's), but I still believe there is strength in numbers. I guess the 500 commissioned ship navy is a thing of the past.
We cruised through the Dismal Swamp Canal at a slow and pleasing speed of 5 kts. It took two days to travel just over 50 miles, but oh what a trip. The water had a look of a good cup of coffee. Midway through the swamp there is a rest area. On one side of the building, is the entrance from the highway, the other is a dock with room for 3 boats. We were rafted up to two other boats. So there were nine of us tied up to the dock. The sailboats were against the dock, and they wanted to leave at first light in the morning. So come 7 am, we did a little dance and the sailboats were off. We slid back up to the dock and went back to relax for a couple more hours. Next stop was Elizabeth City N.C. Mariners warf offers free slip and a courtesy van picks you up to go the local store. The local people come down and look at all the boats passing through town, the local newspaper stopped by and interviewed us and took pictures for a future edition. We wanted to fill up before traveling any farther, so we had plans of going back up river to a local marina and gassing up. We got to the drawbridge, and the operator told us that the bridge was broke and the repairman was on his way. We pulled back to the docks to wait it out. Later the operator to me he had good news and bad news: Good news is that we get to stay in Elizabeth City another night. Bad news is that the bridge is "broke good". It won't be fixed until the next day, so we decided on taking a slip at Pelican Marina. Good thing we aren't in a hurry.Jim and Sharon C. We have spent the last week and a half on the Chesapeake Bay. It will end tomorrow with our arrival in Portsmouth, Va. After our stop in Annapolis, we went to Calvert Marina on Solomons Isl. We wanted to stay one night and make an early departure the next day. The fog kept us in until about 10:00 am, so we exited the Severn River and after facing three ft. waves, we decided that Calvert Marina was a nice place to stay for a while, so we turned around and went back to the same dock we left 2 hours earlier. We stayed in Calvert for two more days and then made a picture perfect day trip down to Deltaville, Va.
We met a couple from N.J. (Mitch and Carole) and they have the same idea as us, but they have made this trip many times before, So our plan is to follow them for a while.
Daisy has learned to relax a little more with the help of Bun. They have been riding on the fly bridge while we are traveling and only wake up when we enter port. What a life of a dog.
We are now sitting at Dozier's Regatta Point Yachting Center on Broad Creek enjoying the beautiful sunset and warmer weather. The days are in the middle 60's, but the evenings turn a little chilly once the sun sets, so south we go.
I hit the snooze button a couple of times, so we departed about an hour later. We decided to stop in Annapolis to spend a few days. We pulled into the harbor not knowing that it was the naval Academy homecoming weekend. We called ahead to the City docks to see if there were any slips available. We were told that one was open wide enough for us. We turned down the alley but the slip they told us was open was taken. With Sharon on the bow, we slowly turned around and beat feet back to the harbor where there was more room to maneuver and plan our next move. We took a mooring ball for a few hours to settle our nerves and then moved to the Annapolis Yacht Center for our stay. Its close to the town waterfront but a little more secure.
We wasted no time to walk around town with everyone else in Maryland. A local told me that the town waterfront is called "Ego Alley". By the looks of some of the boats that came in and turned around and left, there were plenty of ego's to make everyone happy. Its a lot narrower that the picture makes it out to be.

Daisy May is really getting good being around so many people. She still gets startled once in a while, but most times she just looks at people, if they don't look threatening, she just keeps on walking. By the end of this trip, she will be running up to people, wanting to be petted (not).
We saw and heard an old pirate ship with about 25 kids on board singing and wearing pirate garb. I was told that is the "Chucky Cheese" of the harbor. A bunch of kids screaming and acting like pirates out for a cruise around the bay. They also had a "Help Wanted" sign posted for new captains!
Jim and Sharon C. It was a nice trip off the coast with little wind and smooth seas. We decided to pull into Manasquan inlet for the night. The Yacht club was full of fishing boats, but everyone was just sitting on the dock. We only saw one boat return with a nice yellow fin tuna. Next day we departed for Atlantic City. We stayed at Kammermans marina. A long walk to the boardwalk, so we just relaxed on the boat for the evening. Next morning we departed for Cape May, N.J. 2 hours out, we spotted our first pod of dolphins off out port bow about 50 feet. Sharon noticed them and couldn't figure out what the commotion was in the water, then I saw their slick grey body. We had a nice cruise into the cape May harbor and pulled into our assigned slip at Utsch's marina. Here are just a few pictures from the last week. We are still sitting in Cape May, N.J. until the wind gods decide to let us pass up the Delaware Bay.

We got a bike ride in to Cape May beach. Too bad the wind was against us. But it has either been against us or not at all most of the trip.

Next on our itenerary is up the Delaware Bay to the C & D canal, then spend some time on the Chesapeake Bay.

Jim and Sharon C.
